What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
2 Attachment(s)
I got my Mountain House order yesterday. It was the 1 yr entre pack.
Price was $915, and I got charged $85 UPS shipping to Canada. The shipment arrived in 6 days as promised. No border-crossing problems at all. Final COD for duty and brokerage was about $63. My only concern is that, looking at the nutritional information, I think I'd need about 5 more orders to satisfy my regular daily calorie requirements for a year. The cans are fresh with BB dates of 2033. Everything went nice and smooth. Here's the pics: |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
thanks for posting this, I have been looking at the 10 year supply. I have 6 family members so that would probably last 1 year. 19,000 dollars for one year food is brutal

Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
i'm assuming that's a one year supply for 1 person
i'd be asking where's the rest of it . . . |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
oh yeah it looks good and all that but what happens after 2033? Huh? you think about that? huh huh? :bear_wacko:

Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
he can change the 2033 to 2038 and sell it to someone else

Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
Remember , it reconstitutes at an average of 3parts water to 1part product , so don't let it scare you to bad.
FWIW, I use the vegetable stew blend and add a lb or 2 of hamburger a small can of tomatoe paste and a few good jiggers of worcheschire sauce, salt & pepper to taste, it's a great quick stew that my family eats & enjoys. Yes ,I'm a great cook but they like this as much as some of my more labor intensive dishes , so I'm not gonna argue. It's nice to have stored food your family actually enjoys Sooooo, I can highly reccomend the stew vegetables, I've got tons of other stuff I haven't gotten around to trying yet....like the freeze dried pork chops. OH ! BTW , for the Quick stew recipe...I'm sure I could use the powdered tomatoe sauce in lue of the canned tomatoe paste, maybe a little sugar and starch to thicken. I'm sorry , the stew vegetables I mentioned are by "rainy day" they are dehydrated not freeze dried, doesn't matter to me though, they both taste about the same, although they say the freeze dried is slightly more nutritious and last longer. |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
This was the one year of entres, I think it is meant to mean dinners for one year. Doesn't include breakfast, lunch, etc.
I wanted a full supply for a year, but I've never ordered before and didn't know what to expect. Apparently if you order huge amounts, it will get blocked at the border since they don't believe that you'd have $3000+ worth of food for your personal consumption and are instead planning on reselling it. |

On topic, I only have a small amount of Mountain House stuff. Maybe I'll try some tonite. ;) |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
Ash, I think it would be about as healthy as the movie 'Super Size Me' to eat only Mt House for a year. Get a good rotation of canned goods you like and some whole grains you like, beans or peas you like, maybe protein drink powder, freeze dried fruit and veggies... you can make sprouts easily for some fresh greens if you store some sprouting seeds... variety for health and enjoyment too.
Many things from the grocery store keep 5 years easily. |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
I have a good selection of canned goods, I'm just trying to be ready for the worst case, which is the only time I'd dip into my freeze-dried. Unless the year 2033 is about to roll around.

Gotcha. I think some of the fruits last a really long time too. When I read the Mt House labels and taste tested it... you can definitely taste that it is full of stuff whose names you cannot pronounce. On a 3 day hike the body can handle the junk food nature of it fine, but I honestly believe a person eating only that would become ill over a few months. That is why I throw that into most Mt House threads. But you have other stuff already, so apologies.

Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
that looks like 6 months to me but eitherway, that's probably more than anyone around you for a few miles will have.
plus you can probably sell it if you need! congrats! |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
Thanks for posting that. I was curious to see what amount of food that would be.

Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
The picture of those juicy delicious big cans is making me soooooo hungry.
Remind me of a Red Lobster add ... |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
I know you said entree only, but I don't think even that would come close to a year, based on 2000 calories/day.
We've bought a couple of these 25 case deals from Safecastle when he ran specials.....seems like they were about 2200. Here is what 21 cases that came motor freight looks like ( the other 4 cases came in UPS ). Added several cases of meats like pork chops, and several cases fruits from Honeyville for a total of 57 cases.....and I figure based on calorie content alone, little over 1 million calories, that is about 500 day supply for one, or 250 day for wife and I......maybe 9 months at the very outside. Definitely NOT something I would want to live on full time for nine months, but I figure it as a supplement to other stored foods and merely one part of a whole program. |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
Andy, you always gotta one-up people with your tractor pics, don't you?
I will be ordering more, but this first time was somewhat of an experiment since I didn't know what to expect in the way of customs fees. They also warned me, the huge packages they sell often get turned back at the border, so I figured I'd build my supply $1000 at a time and not risk that. |

Ive been looking and the furthest expiration date I've found on canned goods is sometime in 2010 |
Re: What 1K worth of Mountain House looks like.
ya know, when I read threads such as this one it makes me *want* the S to hit the fan just so you guys did not flush a bunch of money down the toliet. I'd hate to think you went to all the time and expense for nothing.

We store, mostly, what we eat ( the Mt House being the exception to that ). The Mt House has a 25 year shelf life, and I suspect based on other "shelf life" dates, that is probably the LOW end....kept in a cool, dry location, I suspect the shelf life is forever.......meaning that is probably the last of it I will ever buy. Second thing, stored food is somewhat like any other form of insurance.....if you NEVER eat it, then you 'wasted' the money spent on premiums. I insure my house, my autos, my earnings ability ( so called "life" insurance...ahahaha ) and such.....most of which are replaceable......WHY the heck wouldn't I insure my ability to remain living with food insurance ?? I know a lot of folks pho-pha this line of thought.....but best case.....you're right and I'm wrong.....I've simply spent money on insurance and never see the "fire". Worst case, I'm right and you're wrong, you die...and maybe I don't. |

Expiration dates on canned goods are wildly conservative. You can double most of them, or more, and get virtually the same goods out of the can. |

The older I get, the more I'm a fan of hydraulics and pneumatics for grunt work.......simply amazing the sheer amount of physical work you can replace with machinery. I happen to love pics because they really DO replace thousands of words in a glance.....and the ones I post are simply a small slice of my world.....but don't mean them to be 'one upping'......sorry if I come off that way..... |

is do you have enough. And of course the issue of why anyone would want to live in that kinda world starts to creep in. The upside I see is that if that is 1 year worth for 1 person it's fairly compact & lightweight, but very expensive for what you get. So yeah, I see your point in that to me it would be a extreme catastrophic insurance policy which you may need. Kinda like paying 100 grand for 1 million of liability insurance on your home in the event someone slips and hurts themselves. Good to be insured to the hilt I suppose, even if you may never need it. |

1) Where did you purchase from? 2) How long from order to shipment and arrival? 3) How would you rate their service? I would like to do the same thing as you. I have a pretty good stockpile of canned goods in the pantry, but want a little extra insurance on the shelf. Scott |
